35th Ave NE Project: Construction Update (5/7/19)

Overview of upcoming work as of May 7, 2019

Night work for final striping on 35th Ave NE begins tonight, Tuesday, May 7 and continues for the next several weeks

Due to the anticipated daytime temperatures in the upper 70s and 80s for the next several weeks, our contractor needs to install final striping on 35th Ave NE at night. Higher temperatures can cause new paint to take longer to cure and is harder to clean up if a vehicle drives through it. Crews will begin work between NE 47th and 75th streets. Once complete, crews will continue working at night between NE 75th and 91st streets.

We are working to minimize impacts wherever feasible and 35th will remain open with one lane in each direction during the work. Please read below for what to expect while striping takes place:

  • Nighttime hours: 7 PM to 7 AM, Monday through Friday
  • 1 lane of traffic in both directions will be maintained at all times: Uniformed police officers (UPOs) and flaggers will direct traffic around the work area
  • Parking will be restricted along the corridor to maintain a safe work area
  • Noise and vibrations during final striping installation at night are expected to be slightly louder than typical traffic but not as loud as nighttime paving.
  • All sidewalks will remain open for people walking

If you have questions or concerns about the work, please contact our project information line, 206-512-3950, as soon as possible and we will do our best to minimize impacts whenever feasible.

Driveways will remain accessible, but you may experience intermittent delays while paint is drying:

Uniformed police officers (UPOs) and flaggers may re-direct you to avoid driving on fresh paint when trying to access a driveway. Fresh paint that has been driven on is difficult to clean up and harmful to vehicles.

If you have concerns about accessing your driveway during nighttime work, please park on side streets and walk to your residence or business.

Closure on the Burke-Gilman Trail May 6

Trail closed between 42nd Pl NE and 40th Ave NE

A contractor working with King County Parks will be removing six hazardous trees leaning  out along the trail. The project is expected to take one full day to complete and will begin at 9 a.m. on Monday, May 6, 2019 and be complete by 7 p.m.

Trail users may opt to use Riviera Place NE as a bypass for the duration of the closure. We ask that all trail users please obey all posted trail closure signs as the trail is narrow and the edge drops off quickly around the work site.

35th Ave NE Project: Construction Update (04/18/19)

Paving on 35th Ave NE between NE 75th and NE 89th streets has been postponed andis now scheduled to take place starting at 6 PM on Friday, April 26. Paving activities may continue as late as 5 pm on Saturday, April 27 based on site conditions. This work is weather-dependent and could change.

Overview of upcoming work as of April 18, 2019

Zone C (between NE 75th and NE 89th streets):

Crews continued preparing for final paving this week and made great progress by finishing all panel repairs on 35th Ave NE. Next week, people will continue to see crews in the project area conducting maintenance and electrical work prior to paving. Traffic control and parking restrictions will remain in place for your safety and the safety of our crews.

What to expect prior to paving on April 26:

  • Typical work hours: Monday – Saturday 7 AM to 7 PM
  • Northbound detour: Northbound traffic will be detoured to Sand Point Way NE between NE 75th and NE 95th streets.
    • 35th will be fully open between NE 65th and 75th streets. However, trucks and other drivers that are traveling through the area may use eastbound NE 65th St to Sand Point Way NE as a detour route.

Please follow detour signs for everyone’s safety. During previous detours, we’ve heard concerns from your neighbors about cut-through traffic on side streets. Please follow the posted detour route and if you must use side streets to reach your home, please drive slowly and watch out for one another.

  • Driveway access: Crews may need to partially block driveways to accommodate safe work zones near existing driveways
    • If a full driveway closure is needed, we will notify businesses and residents in advance
  • Limited turns to/from side streets on 35th Ave NE between NE 75th and 89th streets: Side street access will be limited to establish a safe work area
  • Parking restrictions: Street parking will be closed 24/7 on both sides of 35th Ave NE between NE 73rd and NE 89th streets until construction is finished
    • Please read the restrictions listed on the no parking signs for details to avoid being ticketed or towed
  • Temporary bus stop closures and reroutes: Get the latest information at King County Metro Alerts

Detour map April 18 – 25

What to expect during nighttime paving, scheduled for Friday, April 26:

  • Nighttime paving hours: Starting approximately 6 PM on Friday, April 26 through as late as 5 PM on Saturday, April 27 (based on site conditions and work progress)
  • 35th Ave NE will be fully closed to vehicle traffic between NE 75th and NE 90th streets
    • Vehicles will be detoured at NE 65th and NE 95th streets to Sand Point Way NE
    • Local access only will be maintained for residents and businesses from NE 65th to NE 75th and from NE 90th to NE 95th
  • Residents and businesses between 75th and 90th streets will not have access to their driveways on 35th Ave NE during nighttime paving
    • Please park on side streets before 6 PM on Friday, April 26
  • All sidewalks will remain open. People walking will be able to cross 35th Ave NE at NE 75th St and NE 90th St
    • Please do not walk across 35th Ave NE during paving. Asphalt and tar are very hot and harmful to people and animals
  • Bus stops may be temporarily closed and buses may be rerouted during paving: get the latest information at King County Metro Alerts
  • Please note, paving is weather dependent and may be rescheduled

If you have access concerns, please contact our project information line, 206-512-3950, as soon as possible and we will do our best to minimize impacts during nighttime paving.

35th Ave NE Project: Construction Update (04/05/19)

Construction on 35th Ave NE to resume on April 8
Crews plan to restart construction for the 35th Ave NE Project between NE 75th and NE 89th streets on April 8. Please read below for detailed information about upcoming work.

Overview of upcoming work as of April 5, 2019
Zone C (between NE 75th and NE 89th streets):

On Monday, April 8, crews plan to begin grinding the top several inches of asphalt to prepare for paving. This work is expected to take approximately 2-3 days to complete. Once crews finish grinding, we will use street sweepers to clean-up the work area. Then we will make any additional repairs to the street base and upgrade the remaining curb ramps at NE 75th St and NE 89th St.

During grinding and base repair work, you can expect the following:

  • NEW: Northbound detour: We have received an updated plan from the contractor and wanted to share it with the community prior to work starting. On April 8, 35th Ave NE will be open to southbound traffic only between NE 75th and NE 95th streets. Northbound traffic will be detoured to Sand Point Way NE between NE 75th and NE 95th streets.
    • Trucks and other drivers that are traveling through the area may also use eastbound NE 65th St to Sand Point Way NE as a detour route
    • The detour provides space on 35th for crews to work safely . The detour route to Sand Point Way NE is necessary because of the limited number of arterial streets in this area. It is also one of the few routes that accommodates truck traffic.
  • Temporary driveway closures for up to 1 hour as the grinding machine passes

Please follow detour signs for everyone’s safety. During previous detours, we’ve heard concerns from your neighbors about cut-through traffic on side streets. Please follow the posted detour route and if you must use side streets to reach your home, please drive slowly and watch out for one another.

  • Parking restrictions: Street parking will be closed on both sides of the street, 24/7 until construction is finished, between NE 75th and NE 89th streets
    • Please read the restrictions listed on the no parking signs for details to avoid being ticketed or towed
  • Limited turns to / from side streets and driveways on 35th Ave NE between NE 75th and 89th streets: Side street access will be limited to establish a safe work area
  • Temporary bus stop closures and reroutes: Get the latest information at King County Metro Alerts
  • Typical work hours: Weekdays from 7 AM – 7 PM
