Fixing Juvie Justice (57 min, 2013) is a documentary film about “restorative” or “transformative” justice. When youth are involved in conflict, harm, and “crimes,” are jails, prisons, and punishments the only options? “Fixing Juvie Justice” introduces us to some remarkable alternatives being used in Baltimore, Maryland and New Zealand. These alternatives are forms of “transformative / restorative justice” originating with the Maori people that we are just beginning to learn about, although they have been the practice of indigenous cultures for thousands of years. This new movement focuses on community building and criminal justice. Our discussion will consider what effect ‘fixing juvie justice’ might have in Seattle and King County.
Please join us for the film’s showing. It’s FREE and open to the public! Doors open at 6:30 P.M. Parking is available on NE 89th and NE 90th streets. The film begins at 7:00 P.M with a facilitated community discussion to follow.
